giffgaff Service Updates

How to Check Service Status

If you're experiencing issues with calls, texts or data, the first step is to check whether there's a known outage in your area.

You can check service status in several ways: visit the giffgaff community at community.giffgaff.com where outages are reported and discussed in real time; check the O2 service status page (since giffgaff runs on the O2 network); or use the giffgaff app to see if there are any service alerts in your area.

Network Coverage

giffgaff runs on the O2 network, which provides approximately 99% 4G population coverage across the UK, with 5G coverage expanding in major cities and towns.

To check coverage at your specific location, use the coverage checker at giffgaff.com/coverage-and-service. Enter your postcode to see what level of coverage (2G, 4G, 5G) is available at your address.

Remember that indoor coverage can vary depending on the construction of your building. Thick walls, basements and certain building materials can reduce signal strength.

Planned Maintenance

From time to time, giffgaff (via the O2 network) carries out planned maintenance to improve the network. This may briefly affect service in certain areas.

Planned maintenance windows are typically scheduled during off-peak hours (late night to early morning) to minimise disruption. Advance notice is usually posted in the giffgaff community.

If you experience a brief outage during these windows, service should return automatically within a few hours.

Reporting an Issue

If you're experiencing a problem that isn't listed as a known outage, you can report it through several channels:

  • Post in the giffgaff community forum — other members may be experiencing the same issue and can confirm.
  • Contact a giffgaff agent at giffgaff.com/support/ask — agents typically respond within 24 hours.
  • Use the giffgaff HelpBot at help.giffgaff.com for instant automated support.

When reporting, include your approximate location, the time the issue started, and what exactly isn't working (calls, texts, data, or all three).

3G Shutdown Update

The O2 3G network has been fully switched off as of 2025. This is an industry-wide change affecting all networks in the UK.

If your phone only supports 3G, you will not be able to use mobile data. Voice calls may still work via 2G in some areas, but for a reliable experience you need a phone that supports 4G (LTE) or 5G.

We strongly recommend enabling VoLTE (Voice over LTE) and Wi-Fi Calling on your device to ensure the best call quality now that 3G is no longer available. Check our APN Settings Guide for instructions.

Stay Informed

To stay up to date with service news and updates: enable notifications in the giffgaff app; follow the giffgaff community forum; and keep your phone software up to date to benefit from the latest carrier profiles and network improvements.

For major service announcements, giffgaff also posts updates on their official social media channels.
